A recent Duke University study identifies the cause of drug shortages and proposes potential solutions. Free markets, which limit profits from generic medications, weaken the supply pipeline. Adjustment in those incentives through regulation can boost production and ensure supply. Our regulation of electricity suppliers works well to balance private industry profits with the greater good of society. The federal government must take a similar approach to secure our drug supply. Medication supply is a national strategic initiative requiring immediate attention and solution implementation. Until addressed, people will suffer, and resources will be squandered.
